Wilderness Explorers

Immersive rainforest canopy and lodge experiences in Guyana, guided by local communities with a focus on nature and wildlife.

OUR EXPERIENCES

Wilderness Explorers offers immersive rainforest experiences in the Iwokrama Reserve, combining canopy exploration, guided nature walks, and lodge stays in one of Guyana’s most biodiverse regions. Visitors engage with the forest through elevated canopy walks, wildlife observation, and interpretation led by local guides, with a strong focus on birds, mammals, and plant life. Experiences include walking high above the forest floor on suspension bridges, exploring jungle trails, and staying at Atta Rainforest Lodge. Activities are designed for nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and travelers seeking a deeper connection with the rainforest and its ecosystems.
Good Travel Experience: Iwokrama Canopy Walkway Trail – An elevated rainforest walk offering close encounters with wildlife such as hummingbirds, monkeys, and agoutis, while revealing the forest from a rare canopy perspective. Managed in partnership with local Makushi Amerindians, this GTI-verified experience connects conservation with community development, supporting forest protection and local livelihoods while avoiding negative impacts on nature, culture, and climate.

ABOUT US

Wilderness Explorers operates in partnership with the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development and local communities, including the Makushi Amerindians. The initiative brings together conservation, tourism, and community engagement to offer meaningful experiences in the Iwokrama Rainforest. Located in central Guyana, the Iwokrama Reserve is one of the world’s most intact tropical forests, known for its exceptional biodiversity. Through collaboration with local communities and tourism operators, Wilderness Explorers contributes to a model where tourism supports both environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods. Experiences are guided by knowledgeable local experts who share insights into the rainforest ecosystem, wildlife, and cultural traditions. The approach combines scientific conservation efforts with traditional knowledge, creating a holistic and educational visitor experience rooted in place.
This Impact Partner was shared by the Good Travel Institute as one of their Good Travel Experiences. Each Good Travel Experience is evaluated through a clear and recognised framework, ensuring measurable social, cultural, environmental, and economic benefits for local communities.

OUR IMPACT

The Iwokrama Canopy Walkway and related experiences support conservation of the rainforest by linking tourism revenue to forest protection and sustainable management. The initiative operates as part of a broader conservation model led by the Iwokrama International Centre. Local Makushi Amerindian communities are actively involved in guiding and tourism services, ensuring that benefits are shared locally and that traditional knowledge is preserved and communicated to visitors. Tourism contributes to community development projects and provides alternative livelihoods connected to conservation. By offering low-impact access to the forest canopy and guided experiences, the initiative promotes environmental awareness and responsible tourism practices while helping protect biodiversity and cultural heritage.
