The Global Meaningful Travel Map
The Sundowner Nature Experience Centre
OUR EXPERIENCES
The Sundowner is well-known in Singapore for its apiary and urban rooftop farm, but it is much more than that, offering 20 distinct experiences such as food workshops and award-winning nature-based tours within a conserved shophouse. We professionally relocate native honeybees that would otherwise be exterminated in land-scare / insect-averse Singapore, and give them safe sanctuary on our rooftop (and network of apiaries island-wide). Then we offer immersive tours for participants to encounter and embrace this misunderstood insect that's crucial to human survival. In parallel we run F&B experiences such as a Pasta-making workshop where besides making their own meal from scratch, participants learn the provenance of food and we illustrate how everything in nature is connected-- from soil health to thriving plants to crucial pollinators that produce 70% of the crop man depend on.
ABOUT US
Our vision is to be a transformative place for all who seek connection with nature and the provenance of food. Our mission is to provide unique 5 star-rated experiences that elevate the F&B and lifestyle scene in Singapore, and champion nature through connecting people with food and the honeybee. We aim to show participants the provenance of our food by illustrating the inter-connectedness of everything in nature and rescue and champion the native honeybee -- the guardian of ecosystems and pollinator of 70% of our food crop.
OUR IMPACT
This entry relates to our award-winning tour, the "Rooftop Farm Experience", which won the Outstanding Tour Award 2024 conferred by the Singapore Tourism Board, and also Individual Excellence Award at the inaugural Sustainability Impact Awards 2023 as conferred by The Business Times and United Overseas Bank. Since we stated rescuing native wild bees in Singapore, we have saved over 1,000,000 bees. Bees previously killed by pest control, are now instead relocated to our apiaries island-wide, safe from the threat of fumigation. The environmental outcome is immense: Apis cerana, native to Singapore, is regarded as one of the best pollinators on earth. They play a big role in Singapore's 'City in Nature' vision, being a keystone species (Keystone species helps define an entire ecosystem;without it the ecosystem would be dramatically different or cease to exist altogether).
At our award-winning Rooftop Farm Encounter, participants take part in a Bee Encounter. They learn about and handle live bees. The social outcome is many people with apiphobia (usually from getting stung when young) look at bees with newfound appreciation. With good vibes, they share their experience on social media, with many passing on word that we also do Bee Rescues. We are changing mindsets each time we open our apiary for tours, especially among the young. Our RFE (and experiences in general) are ranked 5 stars on Google.
