Norman Bird Sanctuary
OUR EXPERIENCES
The Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown, Rhode Island, is a 300-acre wildlife sanctuary and environmental education center listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Founded in 1949 through a bequest by naturalist and artist Mabel Norman Cerio, it now welcomes over 20,000 annual visitors for hiking, birding, overnight stays, and 150+ programs and events. With seven miles of trails and fifteen historic buildings, the Sanctuary offers nature walks, concerts, beach parties, and more. Volunteer opportunities include land management, gardening, carpentry, event support, nest box monitoring, and educational outreach in the Curiosity Lab.
ABOUT US
The mission of the Norman Bird Sanctuary is to spark people's curiosity to explore, steward, and find peace and joy in nature. We foster lifelong connections between people and our dynamic natural world. Through educational programs, volunteer opportunities, events, and recreation, we engage a community of stewards who preserve, protect, enjoy and learn from the ecosystems we protect.
OUR IMPACT
Norman Bird Sanctuary is a community resource for people of all ages and backgrounds. Through open space access and educational programming, we foster inclusivity for community members from under-resourced areas. We are committed to expanding our impact through scholarship funding, aligning with our goal to serve families with limited access to environmental education. These scholarships support our mission to provide hands-on, science-focused environmental education to all members of our community.
We are proud to be recognized as a 1% for the Planet Environmental Partner and by Charity Navigator as a Four-Star Charity with a 96% rating.
