Impact
Singapore has made significant strides in sustainability. Guided by the Singapore Green Plan 2030, a whole-of-nation movement to advance the nation’s agenda on sustainable development, government agencies are mobilizing Singaporeans and collaborating with private and public partners to contribute expertise, co-create sustainable solutions, and achieve ambitious targets by 2030, including achieving long-term net zero emissions by 2050. Singapore has also achieved significant milestones in sustainable tourism, being certified as a sustainable destination, marking the first of such recognition on a national level, based on the criteria set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). Several hotels, including the Pan Pacific Hotel Group, The Fullerton Hotel Group, Marina Bay Sands, and attractions such as the Mandai Wildlife Group and the island of Sentosa have also earned their GSTC certifications. Furthermore, the acclaimed Gardens by the Bay joined the EarthCheck Sustainable Destinations program, reaffirming its dedication to environmental stewardship as a Garden. These certifications underscore Singapore’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism practices and minimizing the environmental impact of its tourism activities. Moreover, Singapore’s seamless integration of nature sanctuaries, scenic parks, and idyllic gardens within its urban landscape has garnered acclaim for providing visitors with distinctive and environmentally conscious experiences. With plans to add close to 2,500 more acres of green spaces by 2035, Singapore’s endeavors to harmonize its striking skyline and towering structures with natural spaces have contributed to its reputation as a City in Nature. In addition to these achievements, Singapore has also collaborated with GSTC to develop sustainable roadmaps for hotels and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and is working on the attractions roadmap. The roadmaps outline strategic plans to further advance its sustainability efforts within the tourism industry. All these initiatives demonstrate Singapore’s proactive and continuous approach to promoting sustainable tourism while enhancing the visitor experience for the present and future.
