The Global Meaningful Travel Map

APE Malaysia

APE Malaysia

Experience Borneo's stunning wildlife and vibrant local culture through immersive volunteering, tree planting, and visits to orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries.

OUR EXPERIENCES
We offer unforgettable volunteering experiences of one or two weeks, rich with opportunities to see spectacular wildlife and get to know local people. Guests stay, sleep and eat within a village of Orang Sungai (Malay for “People of the River”) and wake up to the sounds of the Bornean rainforest. Experiences are suitable for adults and families, with activities including habitat restoration (tree planting), wildlife surveys, helping out at the local school and visiting the nearby orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries. Possible wildlife sightings include orangutans and Borneo pygmy elephants as well as an array of primates, birds, lizards and more.

ABOUT US
Animal Projects & Environmental Education (APE Malaysia) is an organization that focuses on conservation as a means to enable the wider change towards a sustainable future. Our aim is to connect everyday people with endangered animals through meaningful experiences. We participate in ongoing conservation projects with willing partners working towards common conservation outcomes. People and organizations can get involved through our volunteering program, education program or corporate responsibility projects.

OUR IMPACT
To date, we have welcomed almost 2,000 volunteers and planted nearly 100,000 trees (with an 85% survival rate). Tree planting takes place as part of a government-led rainforest restoration project – our activities have restored over 40 acres so far. Local communities are fully engaged with the project and benefit with income from providing tourism services and running the tree nursery that supplies our saplings. This Meaningful Travel Map Impact Partner was brought to our attention by Animondial, a specialist consultancy that provides impartial advice to guide travel and tourism, improve animal and nature protection and deliver meaningful change. Animondial’s ‘Animal Protection Network’ is a biodiversity partnerships initiative that aims to identify reputable, professional and impactful NGOs and other organisations to form mutually beneficial biodiversity-benefitting collaborations for nature.
