40 Acres and a Mule Tour
OUR EXPERIENCES
40 Acres and a Mule is a one-person operation that provides visitors to Savannah with private walking tours. The tour lasts two hours and takes visitors to six of Savannah's most historic squares. Along the way, they learn about such local heroes as Andrew Bryan, Susie King Taylor and Garrison Frazier, and get a fresh perspective on such better known historical figures as William T. Sherman, Eli Whitney and James Oglethorpe. They will also learn more about such historic events, such as "The Weeping Time," "The Wanderer Affair" and "The Cornerstone of the Confederacy Speech," that helped galvanize abolitionist sentiments in the North and made Savannah ground zero for the secessionist movement in the South. The tour provides the definitive account of how Savannah came to host the first attempt in American history to achieve racial equity in this country.
ABOUT US
40 Acres and a Mule focuses on the story of how the narrative of Savannah, from its founding in 1733 to the end of the Civil War in 1865, was driven by two competing forces: the promotion of slavery and freedom through faith, and how the second triumphed over the first, culminating in a meeting on January 12, 1865, out of which arose the idea of "40 acres and a mule" for the freed people.
OUR IMPACT
40 Acres and a Mule Tour promotes local culture/traditions by informing visitors to the city about events that took place here that are rarely discussed in other tours of the city. Very few Savannah tours specifically discuss African-American history. This tour is the only that explains how the formation of the Black church in 1786 led to the successful 40 Acres and a Mule Meeting between high U.S. government officials and local Black church leaders in 1865. This is also the only tour that explains how the original vision for the colony of Georgia of agrarian equality and no slavery was revisited during that meeting.
