The Global Meaningful Travel Map
Pingree Detroit
OUR EXPERIENCES
Pingree Detroit handcrafts premium leather goods from repurposed automotive industry waste, keeping Detroit's manufacturing legacy alive in every stitch. Travelers can visit our downtown store to shop one-of-a-kind bags, wallets, and accessories, and witness the craftsmanship firsthand. They may even see a team member making shoes live. As a worker-owned cooperative, every purchase directly supports the makers behind the product, making a visit more than shopping—it’s a connection to Detroit's people, history, and future.
ABOUT US
Pingree Detroit is a worker-owned cooperative uniting veterans and local makers to build a more equitable, sustainable economy. Rooted in Detroit, we operate with a commitment to community well-being, environmental stewardship, and the belief that how something is made matters just as much as what is made.
IMPACT
Pingree Detroit is a worker-owned L3C cooperative, with 77% of profits shared directly with workers and the surrounding neighborhood. Since 2015, we have created 34 part-time and 18 full-time jobs, housed and employed 7 formerly homeless veterans, and delivered nearly 5,000 combined hours of wellness programming, leadership development, and skilled trades training in industrial sewing, leather crafting, shoemaking, and machine maintenance. Environmentally, we have diverted 60,000 lbs of leather from landfills by repurposing automotive industry waste into handcrafted goods. Our cooperative governance model ensures workers have a voice in how the business is run, and our community investment goes beyond wages, building long-term resilience in Detroit neighborhoods.
