Sligo Folk Park
OUR EXPERIENCES
The Sligo Folk Park is a heritage tourist attraction located in the beautiful village of Riverstown, Co Sligo. Here you will take a 'Trip Down Memory Lane' to a bygone era and experience rural Irish Life as it was the the turn of the 19th Century.
ABOUT US
Riverstown Enterprise Development (Sligo) Ltd. is a community run non-profit organisation which has the dual goals of tackling rural degeneration and preserving our rich Irish Heritage. Members of the community came together in the late 1980's and put together a plan to purchase a vernacular farm house built in the 1870's and establish a museum. The building was purchased in 1990 and after a decade of dedication the Sligo Folk Park was opened in 2001 and has been opened on a continuous basis ever since.
OUR IMPACT
Sligo Folk Park is a community run, not-for-profit tourist attraction. We provide employment in an area of disadvantage and provide a central meeting place for social clubs, community groups, local sports clubs, youth groups, charity organisations etc., thus addressing issues of isolation and loneliness in the older generation, encouraging interactions and inclusion within the younger generation, and generally meeting the needs of the local community. The operation of the Folk Park preserves aspects of our Irish Heritage which may otherwise be lost and the attraction of visitors to the folk park increases footfall to the village and supports local businesses. We run a number of family orientated events throughout the year, which provides opportunities for all members of the family to relax and have fun in a fully inclusive safe environment. We have established a nature trail throughout the park which not only highlights the local flora and fauna but educates visitors on their importance and steps we can take to assist in maintaining a stable ecosystem. We are also currently producing a Community Biodiversity Action Plan which will identify habitats not just within the Folk Park but throughout the village of Riverstown and develop a plan of action to safeguard these habitats for future generations.
