It is deeply committed to community engagement and education. It offers classes, workshops, and outreach programs that provide individuals of all ages and backgrounds with the opportunity to experience the joy and power of Africa firsthand. OUR IMPACT
Chiku Awali services have the impact of uplifting and bringing joy to a troubled world. For children, especially those of color, being a part of Chiku Awali as a dancer or a drummer instills pride, helps develop real-life skills such as teamwork, increases their opportunities for self-expression, and creates a sense of attachment to the community. For adults, Chiku Awali provides an opportunity for self-expression, a sense of refreshment and relaxation, a great way to exercise, and a way to form affiliations that give back to the community. Chiku Awali welcomes children and adults with disabilities. Dance and drumming allow these individuals to be an important part of a creative culture. Service is provided by offering classes and by performing in the community for those who cannot access art easily. Chiku Awali performs for facilities such as the Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital in Haverstraw and the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities.
