Alaska Native Heritage Center
OUR EXPERIENCES
Alaska Native Heritage Center preserves and strengthens the traditions, languages, and art of Alaska’s Native People through statewide collaboration, celebration, and education. Through permanent collections, life-sized village sites, and immersive educational programs, ANHC creates immersive experiences for visitors that promote understanding of our rich and diverse Cultures. We are proud to work with groups to offer exclusive interactive experiences including private storytelling demonstrations and Akutaq (Alaska Native Ice Cream) tasting and demonstrations with our Elder Culture Bearer.
ABOUT US
The Alaska Native Heritage Center (ANHC) is a living cultural center located in Anchorage, Alaska that promotes active observance of Alaska Native culture and traditions. As the only statewide cultural and education center dedicated to celebrating all cultures and heritages, ANHC serves as a statewide resource for Alaska Natives from birth until Elder, and we support and celebrate Alaska Natives from all of Alaska’s Native cultures, including Iñupiaq, St. Lawrence Island Yupik, Athabascan, Eyak, Haida, Tsimshian, Tlingit, Unangax̂, Alutiiq (Sugpiaq), Yup'ik,and Cup'ik.
OUR IMPACT
Our vision is thriving Alaska Native people where our cultures are respected and valued. In addition to welcoming nearly 50,000 guests to learn about Alaska's diverse Native Cultures each year, we also serve as a community center for ALL Alaska Native People. Our community programming includes but is not limited to a summer internship program in which Alaska Native youth and young adults gain valuable work experience while connecting to their cultures; an arts-based partnership that allows Alaska Native men experiencing homeless, substance misuse, or challenges with entry after incarceration to heal through connection to art and culture; Indigenous Awareness Workshops; and an education focused program that enhances cultural enrichment and educational opportunities for Alaska Native and American Indian youth and their families in the local school district.
The Alaska Native Heritage Center (ANHC) is a safe place of healing and a place of action. Above all, we are a place for all Alaska Natives. At ANHC, we are dedicated to operationalizing Alaska Native values of love, acceptance, respect, diversity, and community. Although our Alaska Native values have remained constant since time immemorial, the world around us continues to evolve. It is our responsibility to ensure our work is grounded in our values and reflects the needs of our community today, tomorrow, and for thousands of years to come. For that reason, we formed in 2021 an ANHC Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. Comprised of ANHC Board and Staff, the DEI Committee will address pressing issues that affect Alaska Native youth and their futures—because our youth are our future. The DEI committee will help us find ways to honor and celebrate what makes our cultures and communities so unique: our diversity. We are a rich and diverse community, and the makeup of our committee will reflect this diversity to ensure that we continue to serve as a space for ALL Alaska Natives, always.
