Detroit Hives

Detroit Hives

Experience urban bee farming through educational tours, local honey sales, and community revitalization efforts in a vibrant, inclusive green space.

OUR EXPERIENCES
We want to change minds about bees so that people come to appreciate them for the incredible workers they are. We educate locals and visitors to Detroit alike through farm tours and school visits to show the public that bees aren’t something to be afraid of. We aim to spread awareness and build support for the conservation of honeybees. In additon to our tours, we also offer local raw honey for sale, ethically produced from our Detroit Hives.

ABOUT US
We believe a healthy future for bees reflects a healthy future for humanity. The health of those in our inner-cities, specifically people of color, is often the last to be considered – it’s our mission to change this. By transforming vacant lots into urban bee farms, we revitalize neighborhoods. We’re Detroit Hives, a honeybee education and conservation initiative that engages urban communities in our mission by creating cultural experiences that are both educational and relatable.

OUR IMPACT
Detroit Hives serves as a beacon of proactive advocacy, addressing the critical challenges of diversity, inclusion, and equity within Southeastern Michigan with unwavering determination and purpose. As a Black-led organization operating within a predominantly white-dominated field of beekeeping and sustainable land revitalization, Detroit Hives embodies the spirit of representation and empowerment, championing diversity through its pioneering initiatives and fostering a more inclusive and equitable landscape for all (Huffpost, 2018). DH’s commitment to community engagement underscores DH’s dedication to inclusivity, ensuring that the voices and perspectives of the neighbors and residents in the areas slated for revitalization are not only heard but actively incorporated into the planning, execution, and upkeep of the reactivated vacant lots.

By providing accessible and well-maintained green spaces, promoting the conservation of urban pollinators, and spearheading the transformation of neglected parcels into vibrant, productive green spaces, Detroit Hives is actively combatting the entrenched inequities that disproportionately impact African-American communities across the region. With a concentrated focus on addressing blight, food insecurity, and environmental injustices, particularly prevalent in Detroit, Detroit Hives endeavors to generate new avenues of resources and opportunities, fostering a sense of hope, resilience, and empowerment within these historically marginalized communities. Through DH’s relentless commitment to fostering inclusivity, equity, and sustainable urban development, Detroit Hives strives to pave the way for a more just, vibrant, and equitable Southeastern Michigan, where every voice is heard, every life is valued, and every community thrives.
