ABOUT US
Founded in 1995, Tacugama is located on the outskirts of Sierra Leone’s capital Freetown. Initially established to enforce wildlife laws and rescue and rehabilitate critically endangered orphaned Western chimpanzees, we have grown into a diverse conservation organization. Caring for around 100 chimpanzees on-site, we are also actively engaged offsite in community outreach, wildlife field research, environmental sustainability, conservation education and alternative livelihoods programs. We are also an eco-tourism hub for Freetown, welcoming local and international visitors and creating jobs in this valuable sector. This Meaningful Travel Map Impact Partner was brought to our attention by Animondial, a specialist consultancy that provides impartial advice to guide travel and tourism, improve animal and nature protection and deliver meaningful change. Animondial’s ‘Animal Protection Network’ is a biodiversity partnerships initiative that aims to identify reputable, professional and impactful NGOs and other organisations to form mutually beneficial biodiversity-benefitting collaborations for nature.

OUR IMPACT
Tacugama is one of the leading wildlife conservation groups in Sierra Leone. Chimpanzees arriving at the sanctuary are typically orphans resulting from bushmeat hunting and loss of habitat for whom lifetime care is the only option. We conduct a range of environmental activities locally and around the country including forest patrols, livelihood support, field research and awareness raising. All profits from ecotourism go to fund this crucial and inspiring work.
