THE DETROIT UNDERGROUND RAILROAD HISTORICAL SOCIETY (D.U.R.H.S.)

Experience a powerful tour highlighting Detroit's role in the Underground Railroad, featuring storytelling, reenactments, and preserved historic sites.

OUR EXPERIENCES
The Detroit Underground Railroad Historical Society (D.U.R.H.S.) offers a powerful, immersive lecture tour that brings to life the journeys of over 5,000 freedom seekers who passed through our three historic sites on their way to Canada. Through compelling storytelling, historical reenactments, and preserved landmarks, visitors experience the fear, courage, and hope that defined each step toward freedom. The tour highlights Detroit’s critical role as the final stop before crossing the Detroit River, exploring the secret networks, safe houses, and heroic individuals—Black and white—who risked everything to help others escape slavery. This moving experience not only honors the legacy of the Underground Railroad but also invites reflection on its lasting impact today.

ABOUT US
At the Detroit Underground Railroad Historical Society (D.U.R.H.S.), our mission is to collect, preserve, and share the truth about the courageous journeys of freedom seekers and the vital role played by Detroit’s Second Baptist Church in the Underground Railroad. Through research, education, and public engagement, we illuminate the powerful stories of resistance, solidarity, and liberation that define this chapter of American and Canadian history. We are committed to honoring this legacy by fostering awareness, encouraging dialogue, and ensuring that the sacrifices and triumphs of those who fought for freedom are never forgotten.

OUR IMPACT
Our work leaves a lasting impact not only on visitors—who are often deeply moved by the powerful stories and artifacts—but also on the broader community. By preserving and sharing the history of Freedom Seekers and the vital role of Detroit’s Second Baptist Church, we foster cultural pride, historical awareness, and a deeper connection to the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.
