Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful
OUR EXPERIENCES
Our mission is to Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful is a 501(c)3 environmental nonprofit organization with a mission to create a more sustainable and beautiful region through waste reduction, education, and active community involvement. We host different neighborhood cleaning events in the Nevada area, cleaning up local parks, waterways and neighborhoods. We also have a Youth Education program that teaches K-12 about the local environment.
ABOUT US
KTMB was established in Reno, Nevada in 1989 by members of the Biggest Little City Committee. Originally known as Western Nevada Clean Communities, the organization was created to address the cleanliness, or lack thereof, of our community. Thus began KTMB’s first program, Adopt-A-Park, which is still in existence today as Adopt-A-Spot. Gradually, KTMB added new programs and services designed to address community cleanliness. Today, KTMB carries on its 33-year history by bringing the community together to clean and beautify local parks, waterways, neighborhoods and open spaces through action, education, and outreach, with a special focus on the sustainability of public lands and the Truckee River Watershed. On average, KTMB engages 5,000 volunteers annually through our Beautification and Cleanups Program and removes an average of 100 tons of trash and green waste from the environment every year. KTMB strives, not just to address current environmental concerns, but to prevent future issues as well by focusing on the root of the problem: a need for environmental education and/or action.
KTMB accomplishes this with our Youth Education and Sustainability Education Programs. Our Youth Education Program teaches K-12th grade youth in Washoe County about the local environment using three lesson modules designed to increase students' environmental literacy and foster the next generation of environmental stewards. Through our Sustainability Education Program, KTMB brings environmental education to the community at large through educational tabling events, guided hikes, presentations, and green business certifications.
OUR IMPACT
KTMB's work in the community serves every person who lives, works, and plays in Northern Nevada. This is possible because every community member benefits from a cleaner Truckee River, a natural resource that supplies 85% of Washoe County residents with drinking water. Similarly, everyone benefits from cleaner public spaces and open areas, as they make up the parks and natural areas that are integral to the identity of Northern Nevadans. The entire community benefits from accessible environmental education that inspires community members to dispose of their waste properly, conserve natural features and resources, and protect the planet.
