The Global Meaningful Travel Map
Kylemore Abbey & Gardens Ltd.
OUR EXPERIENCES
Kylemore Abbey is one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions. Originally built in the late 1800s by Mitchell Henry MP, a wealthy businessman and liberal politician, Kylemore Castle is now home to a Benedictine community who have resided here since 1920. Discover the new visitor experience in the Abbey, From Generation to Generation... the Story of Kylemore Abbey. Enjoy woodland and lakeshore walks, explore magnificent buildings, and visit Ireland’s largest Walled Garden. Savor wholesome food and delicious home baking in our Café or Garden Tea House.
ABOUT US
Kylemore Abbey has operated as a world-class visitor experience since the early 1990s. However, for the past 105 years, it has also been a Benedictine monastery. The ethos of the Benedictine community—who live, pray, and work at Kylemore—is rooted in hospitality and education. Their mission has been to welcome people from around the world, sharing and protecting this beautiful site and the living history at its heart.
OUR IMPACT
The Benedictine nuns, as custodians of the 1,000-acre Kylemore Estate, are committed to protecting, preserving, and promoting its unique biodiversity. A comprehensive sustainability plan is being implemented to establish Kylemore as a centre for biodiversity research and a national leader in sustainable tourism.
A formal Sustainability Policy ensures these goals are met across the estate. Kylemore Abbey is also one of Connemara’s largest employers, providing over 150 jobs each year.
In preserving the estate’s heritage, beauty, and ethos, Kylemore aims:
To be Ireland’s most memorable visitor experience
To drive local economic growth through leadership, education, sustainability, innovation, and career development
At Kylemore, we believe sustainable tourism balances economic, social, and environmental impacts while supporting visitors, the environment, and local communities (UN Tourism, n.d.). Our focus is on reducing harm and increasing positive impact.
