Awamaki

Experience authentic Andean culture through artisan-led workshops, sustainable tourism, and community engagement in the breathtaking Sacred Valley.

OUR EXPERIENCES
Awamaki, together with its artisan partners, offers authentic travel experiences for both independent and group travelers. The organization connects visitors to the Sacred Valley and the skilled artisans in the Quechua communities of the high Andes. Awamaki’s sustainable tourism packages bring guests to Quechua villages, where they can meet and learn from female artisan partners through weaving lessons, language classes, women-led cultural experiences, and the opportunity to support these women’s fair trade businesses through the Awamaki store. The organization also offers volunteer opportunities for travel and school groups, as well as individual placements ranging from 3 weeks to six months. Volunteers and interns have the chance to experience NGO life in Peru while contributing their skills in meaningful ways.

ABOUT US
Awamaki collaborates with indigenous women in Peru to create sustainable economic opportunities and improve women’s financial independence. Formed in 2009, we work with eight women-led, rural Andean artisan cooperatives to provide education, training and market access. Building women’s financial independence is at the core of everything we do. From our training programs to the products we create, our shared values of reciprocity, community and thoughtfulness guide us in every aspect of how we operate. Together we are creating a world in which indigenous women can build the future they want for their families and their communities.

OUR IMPACT
At Awamaki, our sustainable tourism program collaborates with indigenous women and their families to foster cultural, socioeconomic, and environmental progress. We promote cultural sustainability by supporting traditional Peruvian weaving and selling timeless, Andean-inspired pieces. Our socioeconomic impact is seen in the training we provide in quality control, product development, and technical skills, helping artisan cooperatives grow their businesses independently. Environmentally, we reduce textile waste by creating bucket hats from scraps and prioritize climate resilience in new product development.
