OUR EXPERIENCES
We specialize in week long remote fly-in backpacking expeditions around Alaska. A core component of our business is skills trips for women aimed to put the power and knowledge back in their hands so they are able to access remote, wild places on their own terms through their own skills. We aim to get more women outdoors and in touch with their natural environment. Through our expeditions in Alaska we teach outdoor skills and empower women to plan and execute their own trips into the wilderness. We curate specialized small-group trips for beginners, advanced adventurers, and everywhere in between so that we can share magic of the Alaskan backcountry in an intimate setting.
ABOUT US
Backpack Alaska is a woman-owned and locally-operated adventure travel company in Alaska. At Backpack Alaska our ethos is simple. Approach the wilderness with respect, tread lightly, leave no trace, eat good healthy food, and allow the landscape to challenge you. Our group sizes are small and we place importance on limiting the size of our groups so you can really immerse yourself into your surroundings without the hum of a crowd.
OUR IMPACT
Running trips in wild places will inevitably have an impact on the ecosystem. With that in mind we operate smaller trips than other operators - usually 4 people or less to limit our impact on the environment. We want to take people into these spaces so they better understand what is worth protecting and not cause unnecessary harm in the process. We switch up our routes and camping areas on each trip so we don't continually disturb the same areas. We work with local vendors and farmers to bolster community involvement in our expeditions. Additionally, the guiding industry is notoriously difficult for employees with long hours, low pay, and limited opportunities for advancement. We are women owned and operated with a mission to provide more space for women, increased wages and room for growth for employees. We are building a space people can continue to grow for more than a couple summer seasons. Sustainability in all areas of the business is what we strive for. We do spend a significant amount of resources to access remote, wild spaces and we offset that through a variety of initiatives. Our small team works remotely so we eliminate our need to commute to the office. Our food is predominately locally sourced to eliminate unnecessary transportation resources. Leftover food is fed to chickens which in turn provides eggs for our trips, compost for the garden that grows some of the vegetables we eat on expeditions, and an overall reduction in plastic packaging.
