ABOUT US
Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) was formed as the Galveston Historical Society in 1871 and merged with a new organization formed in 1954 as a non-profit entity devoted to historic preservation and history in Galveston County. Over the last sixty years, GHF has expanded its mission to encompass community redevelopment, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation, coastal resiliency and stewardship of historic properties. GHF embraces a broader vision of history and architecture that encompasses advancements in environmental and natural sciences and their intersection with historic buildings and coastal life and conceives of history as an engaging story of individual lives and experiences on Galveston Island from the 19th century to the present day.
OUR IMPACT
Galveston Historical Foundation strengthens the community through a business model that reinvests tourism revenue, memberships, and grants into the preservation of historic sites and the stewardship of more than 20 properties. Socially and culturally, GHF safeguards Galveston’s diverse heritage—ranging from African American history initiatives and Juneteenth programming to maritime traditions—while creating vibrant public spaces through events that draw locals and visitors together. Environmentally, the organization leads coastal resiliency efforts, such as shoreline restoration and preservation of maritime vessels, and educates the public on climate impacts to historic communities. Through educational tours, lectures, and living history programs, GHF reaches tens of thousands annually, building awareness of preservation’s role in cultural identity and inspiring stewardship across generations, with measurable success seen in increased visitation, expanded community engagement, and restored historic assets now thriving in public use.
