OUR EXPERIENCES
Oyster Farm Tour & Tasting - This is a multisensory, authentic experience delivered on a working farm where you will tour our farm, and learn about the farming process from seed to plate, You will see the team working on the farm whether it be grading, packing, or turning bags in the bay. Taking a farm tour with us allows you to see where and how we work, and how our beautiful oysters are produced.
ABOUT US
Irish oysters have been farmed in Ballinakill Bay since 1893. We took over the farm in 2014 and have incorporated its history and heritage into today's working farm. It takes three years to bring the oysters from seed to plate, working together with nature to cultivate the finest product. We are active participants in government sponsored programmes to develop our aquaculture in a sustainable way. We are delighted with the recognition of Gold Membership status of the Origin Green Food and Drink Sustainability Programme in 2024. We are proud to be one of the 22 producers of "A Taste The Atlantic", a tasting trail along the Wild Atlantic Way organised by Failte Ireland and BIM, the Irish Fisheries Board.
IMPACT
Environment: We are constantly assessing our farming methods to ensure minimum disturbance of the seabed, allowing the ecosystem beneath the oysters the to thrive. The oysters as filter feeders produce a positive impact on the quality of the water of the bay and hence on the diverse range of life on the seabed from seaweed to invertebrates, crustaceans, bivalves and fish. We test this water weekly to ensure its status of Grade A is monitored and maintained. In line with our Origin Green membership we constantly monitor and improve our use of energy resources, packaging materials, and reduction of waste.
Community: We have brought a decommissioned farm back to life employing seven local residents. We seek to provide continued care, training and support for our employee's well being. We seek to continually improve our standing in the community and actively support the Diamond Hill Community Centre and the local branch of St Vincent DePaul.
