Antiquum Farm

Antiquum Farm

Experience innovative wine farming with a unique ecosystem of grazing animals, producing expressive wines in a lush, biodiverse setting.

OUR EXPERIENCES
Antiquum Farm is a global thought and practice leader in the regenerative agriculture movement and the birthplace of the world's most unique and ambitious wine farming system. We farm without fertilizers or outside influences. Sheep, chickens, geese, and pigs graze the vineyard, nourishing the wines in a system we call Grazing-Based Viticulture. This emphatically alive and exuberant vineyard yields intensely expressive wines of an individualistic spirit.

ABOUT US
Antiquum Farm, nestled in the southern Willamette Valley, pioneers a revolutionary approach to viticulture called Grazing Based Viticulture, developed by owner Stephen Hagen. This innovative method integrates viticulture, animal husbandry, and regenerative farming, fostering a dynamic ecosystem that nourishes both the land and the vineyard. Through rotational grazing with sheep, pigs, geese, and chickens, the farm has cultivated a unique microbiome, eliminating synthetic fertilizers since 2007. The result is a self-sustaining vineyard that reflects the symbiotic relationship between animals and soil, producing wines that embody true sustainability and terroir.

Over 25 years, Stephen and Niki Hagen transformed forest and pastureland into a thriving vineyard and homestead, crafting every structure by hand. Their focus on regenerative agriculture has yielded remarkable changes in vine behavior and grape characteristics, challenging traditional notions of winegrowing. This lush, biodiverse farm, safeguarded by Maremma dogs, thrives as a living symphony of nature. Antiquum Farm redefines sustainable winegrowing, championing microbial diversity and ethical farming as essential components of expressive, authentic wines.

OUR IMPACT
Grazing-Based Viticulture was first conceived and implemented at Antiquum Farm. The central tenet of this process is to grow wines that clearly communicate the wild and honest soul of this place and the principles of its people. Antiquum Farm is managed without fertilizers, compost, or foliar feeds in order to truly isolate our site, conserve resources, and create wines of individualistic spirit and truthful terroir. We have carefully selected animals that physically fit into the constraints of the vineyard, complement each other, and support an intricate, living, breathing ecosystem. We see our farm as a complex community where the vines are part of a whole, not the whole.

Farming in this manner is an all encompassing way of life that asks a viticulturist to become so much more than a winegrower. Producing the truest, most articulate, and expressive wines requires the vineyard to be transformed into more than a collection of vines, techniques, and methods. In doing so, the farmer creates the opportunity for something completely divergent from historical, varietal, or regional expectations. The diversity of the farm results in healthier, more resilient vines and produces wines of soulful clarity and unexpected character that are true expressions of this place and its people.
