ABOUT US
Our mission is to protect and preserve the historical community of Freedmen's Town. Created in 2018, the Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, aims to protect and preserve the history of Freedmen’s Town for the benefit of future generations. The Conservancy’s role is to “Tell the Story of Freedom” by educating and engaging visitors from around the world about the unique and revelatory history of this largely untold chapter of Houston’s and America’s past.

The conservancy plays a vital role in protecting and sharing the legacy of Freedmen's Town, ensuring that future generations understand its significance as a symbol of resilience and freedom. Through heritage tours, educational programs, and special events, the Conservancy fosters a sense of pride and connection among residents and visitors. Freedmen's Town serves as a hub for celebrating African American Heritage, showcasing loacl art, music, and stroytelling that reflect the community' rich history. By highlighting the achievements and contributions of Freemen's Town, the Conservacy inspires individuals and communities to embrace their own potential.

What accommodations do you make for people living with disabilities?
There are accommodations for people with disabilities to the Freedmen's Town Visitor Center and the African American History Research Center at the Gregory School. The tours of the streets have uneven paved areas that may difficult for individuals with disabilities to access.
