Chimu Islands, the Guardians of the Titicaca National Reserve

Sail Lake Titicaca’s Chimu Islands, where ancestral artisans protect biodiversity and share sustainable, community-led traditions.

OUR EXPERIENCES
The Chimu Islands are located in the Titicaca National Reserve, surrounded by majestic landscapes that are home to a rich diversity of flora, extensive reed beds, and endemic fauna. The inhabitants of the Chimu Islands offer eco-friendly experiences with high cultural value, where travelers can enjoy the impressive landscape of the Titicaca National Reserve. On a raft made of totora reeds, visitors can navigate the waters of this ancient lake and discover the forms of life that inhabit its environment, as well as learn about the ancestral techniques of working with totora reeds, admire local crafts, and learn about life on the highest navigable lake in the world. Visitors can explore the Titicaca National Reserve, a unique ecosystem in the highlands, home to lush reed beds and rich biodiversity.

ABOUT US
The “Association of Community Tourism Entrepreneurs of the Chimu Islands” is made up of nine families committed to community tourism. The Chimu Islands are inhabited by an ancestral community of artisans who are dedicated to protecting the reserve by making responsible use of its natural resources and caring for its cultural heritage. Their daily life revolves around fishing, reed harvesting, and the production of traditional handicrafts. They are called “the guardians of Lake Titicaca” because they promote the sustainable use of its resources and connection with the environment.

OUR IMPACT
At Isla Chimú, we work on pillars that ensure sustainability: Community and Culture. We know that travel can be transformative and have a positive impact on communities, which is why we work with commercial partners who promote respect and collective well-being. We care for the biodiversity that sustains our life on the islands, from the food provided by the lake to the careful use of sustainable energy. In addition, we work in partnership with the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP). Our local interpreters are certified as volunteer park rangers, which guarantees a quality experience that respects the environment. We are TOURCERT - Travel for Tomorrow certified, which supports our work in sustainability management.
