OUR EXPERIENCES

Good Travel Experience: GTI-verified the Green Iguana Conservation Project is run by Belizean owners and staff. This initiative offers a purpose-driven encounter with the endangered green iguana, combining education, rehabilitation, and conservation to protect both animal and habitat for future generations. On a guided tour, learn about the life cycle, habitat, and importance of green iguanas as you explore the project’s rearing and release programs. Every visit supports this community-led conservation effort, helping safeguard Belize’s biodiversity and empower local conservation work.

ABOUT US

Since 1996, the Green Iguana Conservation Project at San Ignacio Resort Hotel has been at the forefront of conservation efforts for the threatened Green Iguana. An informational and educational exhibit provides a closer look at this reptile and its vital role in river habitat ecological balance. The Adopt an Iguana Program raises funds for the project and scholarships for local children.
This Impact Partner was shared by the Good Travel Institute as one of their Good Travel Experiences. Each Good Travel Experience is evaluated through a clear and recognised framework, ensuring measurable social, cultural, environmental, and economic benefits for local communities.

OUR IMPACT

The project channels funds from the Adopt an Iguana Program into 12 tuition scholarships for Belizean students since its inception, supporting local education while advancing iguana protection and river habitat balance. Recognized in the 2025 Green Destinations TOP100, it demonstrates effective community-led conservation.
