ABOUT US
Bang Kobua is one of the six sub-districts in Bang Kachao, Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province, located conveniently close to Bangkok. Set along the Chao Phraya River and its canals, the community’s way of life has long been connected to the water—reflected in traditional practices such as water-based transportation, riverside homes, and agriculture, particularly fruit gardening in raised-bed gardens. This rich cultural heritage has been preserved to this day, blending history, wisdom, and local traditions.
The Bang Kobua Community Tourism Promotion Club was established to leverage the community’s potential as a tourist destination, using tourism to generate income, support the local economy, and promote sustainable development. Visitors can experience the authentic Thai way of life through a range of activities.
OUR IMPACT
The club faced issues with garbage in the canal and partnered with Wat Jak Daeng and the waste management team from the OUR Khung Bangkarchao project to investigate the source. They repurposed waste materials like foam and fishing nets to create an innovative garbage buoy system called the "Red Dragon," which blocks trash from flowing into the community. They also developed smaller "Little Dragon" buoys to collect floating waste within the canal, using the natural currents.
This initiative has turned Bang Kachao into:
A learning hub for tourism and waste management, attracting students and other communities.
A model for sustainable, low-carbon tourism, with efforts like collecting garbage, planting nipa palms, and tracking carbon credits.
A prototype community for net-zero tourism, offering eco-friendly activities like nature cruises and cold-dyeing.
By using waste to manage waste, the club significantly reduced costs, creating a buoy system for only 151 baht/meter, compared to 3,000-4,000 baht/meter for traditional buoys. This simple, affordable innovation can be applied to other communities facing similar challenges. The project not only keeps the canals clean but also preserves aquatic habitats, supports local food sources, and enhances tourism.
Through collective efforts, the community has transformed Bang Kachao into a beautiful, eco-friendly destination, generating income and establishing a tourism fund that supports conservation and provided medical supplies during the COVID-19 outbreak.
