The Global Meaningful Travel Map
Lough Mardal Lodge
OUR EXPERIENCES
Lough Mardal Lodge is a lakeside Eco Lodge with luxury Yurt and Shepherd's Hut accommodation offering holiday-makers a sustainable getaway where they can sleep underneath the stars, get back to nature and feel their shoulders drop as the modern world stresses disintegrate.
ABOUT US
We’re passionate about sustainable travel and offer a unique, eco-conscious escape for the modern traveller. Set on 90 acres of unspoilt lakeside bogland, our five yurts and shepherd’s hut combine 5-star comfort with ethical design, using locally sourced touches like Studio Donegal blankets and Magee tweed. A grass-roofed, strawbale eco-building houses guest amenities.
We invite guests to experience the natural beauty of South Donegal and enjoy a peaceful, nature-based retreat. Our goal is to provide a sustainable alternative to traditional getaways—one that fosters well-being, connection to nature, and inspires more mindful travel.
OUR IMPACT
At Lough Mardal Lodge, sustainability is woven into everything we do. From the outset, our goal was to create a luxurious yet ethical retreat, built from natural materials like strawbale, mud, and timber, powered by solar energy, and nestled on 90 acres of untouched lakeside bogland. The Lodge itself, with its grass roof and panoramic views, offers a deep sense of peace and connection to nature.
Our day-to-day operations reflect strong eco values—from zero-synthetic soft furnishings and natural cleaning products to thoughtful waste and energy management. We support local makers such as Studio Donegal and Magee, and share local guides to help guests discover Donegal’s vibrant culture, nature, and businesses. Bottle return proceeds go to Liquid Therapy, a local organisation supporting inclusive watersports.
Alongside our accommodation, we run a certified organic farm with a rare-breed Dexter herd. This regenerative approach protects soil health, biodiversity, and the wider ecosystem. We also offer free tours and advice to those interested in eco-building and organic farming, along with a curated library of resources.
Guests often leave feeling inspired to make small but meaningful changes—proof that sustainable travel can be both restorative and transformative.
