ABOUT US
Elegba Folklore Society provides cultural education through the arts. With attention to aspects of African world culture, the programs offer experiential learning to express the human experience through creative works. Founded in 1990, Elegba Folklore Society has resided in its downtown cultural center for most of those years. It is a fixture in the center of the city in the Richmond Arts District. The center is open to receive individuals and groups to explore visual arts, material culture and intimate gatherings for music, poetry, film and food. Choose it as a location for your event.

Elegba Folklore Society also welcomes families and groups in February to the Black Book Expo • A Conscious Literary Festival, in June for Juneteenth, A Freedom Celebration, Richmond's flagship commemoration, in August for the banner Down Home Family Reunion, A Celebration of African American Folklife and in December for the Capital City Kwanzaa Festival, the largest of its kind in Virginia. Recognitions include HGTV, Fodor's Travel, TripSavvy, Conde Nast Traveler and the City of Richmond. The Society's performing company has appeared internationally; it won a RVA Dance Award for Best African Choreography. The Society's menu of cultural history tours reveal untold stories that have shaped our world.
