Comuna 13 has become a synonym of transformation and resilience and a definite must-visit for travelers in Medellín. On this tour you will be immersed in three different neighborhoods within the Comuna and will learn its history directly from impressive artists who led impactful projects that managed to transform Colombia’s most feared district. You will be picked up at your hotel to take you to San Javier, Comuna 13’s entry before moving on to the highest part of the Comuna, Nuevos Conquistadores neighborhood. Here, you can see Medellín’s rural outskirts and have a privileged view over Comuna 13 and the entire city. Descending through El Corazón, Independencias, and El Salado neighborhoods you will learn the impressive story of how dances and musical culture helped local youth and created peace. You will understand the dimensions of the transformation as you hear the locals narrating the rough conditions that they had to face years before due to gang wars, para-military groups, and urban guerillas. To give you a first-hand experience of the activities that held the community together, you will visit Son Bata’s music studio where local musicians recorded one of their hits “Estamos Melos” and learn from experts how to play percussion. After this easy and enjoyable activity, you can get loose and learn how to dance with one of the best dancers at Son Batá.

OUR IMPACT
Impulse Travel partnered with Tourism Cares on a Meaningful Travel Summit with Colombia in November, 2021 and operated as our DMC for the program, bringing our attendees to a handful of local experiences represented on this Map. They were also recipients of a grant from Tourism Cares and Tauck Ritzau Innovative Philanthropy. ProColombia partnered with Tourism Cares on a Meaningful Travel Map in advance of the Tourism Cares with Colombia Meaningful Travel Summit in November, 2021. The pins on the Colombia Map represent community tourism experiences around the country, offered by receptive operators who design their tours for local impact, economic benefit for communities, and to reflect the richness of the experiences you can have traveling throughout Colombia. Their work, and the organizations they support, diffuse the economic benefits of tourism and support sustainable tourism growth in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
