Santa Marta: Overcoming and developing sustainable community based tourism

Experience the Sierra Nevada's rich culture through organic farming, local traditions, and stunning nature, while supporting sustainable community tourism.

OUR EXPERIENCES
Macana offers tourist routes with unique experiences where visitors can discover what life is like in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. You will share the daily life of the inhabitants of the mountains, learn about and experience agricultural practices at the hands of expert producers of organic coffee and honey production and enjoy the natural attractions of the region.

ABOUT US
Macana is a community tourism initiative led by Red Ecolsierra in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, specifically in the areas of Minca and Boquerón. Our objective is to offer tourists the opportunity to live with the locals of the area so that they can learn about their traditions and the wonderful ecosystem of the mountains.

OUR IMPACT
Through the consolidation of ecotourism and agrotourism initiatives linked to the natural and socio-cultural offerings related to the territories and traditions of the beneficiary families, we support the conservation of natural areas, promote sustainable growth, improve incomes and generate quality job opportunities. ProColombia partnered with Tourism Cares on a Meaningful Travel Map in advance of the Tourism Cares with Colombia Meaningful Travel Summit in November 2021. The pins on the Colombia Map represent community tourism experiences around the country, offered by receptive operators who design their tours to create local impact, generate economic benefits for communities, and reflect the richness of the experiences you can have traveling throughout Colombia. Their work, and the organizations they support, diffuse the economic benefits of tourism and support sustainable tourism growth in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
