Atlantic Shark Expeditions
OUR EXPERIENCES
Atlantic Shark Expeditions offers offshore shark viewing and cage diving expeditions off Nova Scotia, providing guests with the opportunity to safely observe blue sharks, makos, porbeagles, and white sharks in their natural habitat. Each expedition integrates hands-on science, including shark tagging, data collection, and educational briefings, allowing travelers to participate in real conservation research. Guests experience a full-day, small-group ocean adventure aboard our vessel Apex Explorer, combining ecotourism, citizen science, and marine education.
ABOUT US
Established in 2023 by marine biologist Dr. Neil Hammerschlag, Atlantic Shark Expeditions offers unparalleled opportunities to safely view and cage dive with sharks off Nova Scotia (Canada), while directly supporting scientific research. Each expedition is more than a thrilling adventure—it’s a contribution to vital shark conservation research being conducted onboard. By joining us, guests become an integral part of this research, helping to ensure the future of these magnificent creatures.
IMPACT
Atlantic Shark Expeditions (ASE) operates as a conservation-driven social enterprise where tourism directly enables marine research and public education. Our expeditions off Nova Scotia integrate non-lethal shark research, including photo identification, abundance monitoring, and tagging, into trips. Revenue from guests funds vessel time and field operations that contribute real data to regional and international shark monitoring efforts, supporting evidence-based conservation of threatened species. Environmental impact is embedded in our model: we use strictly low-impact, no-hook protocols and prioritize shark safety and scientific integrity. Educationally, each expedition includes structured science briefings and real-time research engagement. Guests leave with measurable increases in knowledge and more positive perceptions of sharks as essential apex predators. Socially and economically, ASE supports coastal Nova Scotia communities by attracting domestic and international travelers who utilize local accommodations, suppliers, and services. Tourism is not the end product; it is the mechanism through which we generate science, shift perceptions, and advance shark conservation.

Atlantic Shark Expeditions is committed to making our experiences as accessible as possible within the operational realities of offshore marine expeditions.
Our vessel has stable deck space with seating, handholds, and crew assistance available at all times. Guests are not required to enter the shark cage to participate—many fully experience the expedition from the deck. We provide personalized safety briefings and can adapt participation levels to accommodate mobility limitations, balance concerns, or medical conditions. Crew members assist with boarding, movement on deck, and equipment use.
We communicate clearly in advance about the physical nature of the experience (e.g., ladder access, uneven surfaces, vessel motion) so guests can make informed decisions. We also encourage guests to disclose accessibility needs ahead of time so we can plan appropriate accommodations where feasible.
While offshore conditions limit full barrier-free access, we work proactively and respectfully with individuals to maximize safety, comfort, and meaningful participation.
