The Global Meaningful Travel Map
Great Himalaya Trail
Note: This Impact Partner does not have a physical location but its work covers the Himalaya train in Nepal, India and Bhutan. Map location is general.
OUR EXPERIENCES
The Great Himalaya Trail enables regenerative trekking across a 4,500km network by documenting routes, approving Local Operators, and verifying measurable social and environmental impact. We prioritise pro-poor tourism, directing over $1,000 per trekker into remote village economies and female-led micro-enterprises. Through our mandatory carbon and waste calculator and clear operator standards, every journey is designed to reduce environmental footprints while preserving the cultural heritage of the world’s highest landscapes.
ABOUT US
The Great Himalaya Trail is a 4,500km multi-country trekking network across Nepal, India, and Bhutan. We operate as a social enterprise/non-profit hybrid focused on alleviating poverty through pro-poor tourism. We document and digitise routes, produce maps and GPX files used by trekkers and national tourism bodies, and set fixed criteria for approved GHT Local Operators. Through training, data management, and quality control, we support communities, tour operators, and travellers in delivering responsible, measurable impact in remote Himalayan regions.
IMPACT
The Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) delivers measurable, regenerative impact across four key pillars. Our Governance/Business Model achieved a 5/5 Social Participation score in 2025 by shifting power to local stakeholders and ensuring 40% of trek costs stay in-community. In Community Impacts, 61 trekkers injected $63,100 directly into remote villages, averaging $1,034 per person, empowering female-owned micro-enterprises. Our Environmental results are industry-leading: we reduced trekker waste by 311kg and cut administrative carbon emissions by 80% using our mandatory GHGe Calculator.
Impact data submitted by Local Operators is cross-checked with trekkers before publication to ensure accuracy and accountability. Our Education initiatives are transforming 100+ GHT Check-In Points into community-led hubs where locals receive hygiene, safety, and sustainability training. These results demonstrate verified poverty alleviation and climate action across the Himalaya.
