OUR EXPERIENCES
The Historical Society of Martin County is the 501(c)(3) organization that serves as the umbrella organization for The Elliott Museum and The House of Refuge, built in 1875 and the oldest and most iconic building in Martin County Florida. The House of Refuge is one of ten original houses of refuge built among the east coast and has been listed on the National register of Historic Places since 1974. Volunteer opportunities are available and offer challenging, fun, and important ways to share the rich and varied history of The House of Refuge.

The Historical Society of Martin County is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the history of the Treasure Coast, while providing fresh, eclectic, and relevant exhibitions and experiences. OUR IMPACT
The House of Refuge is steeped in history, filled with artifacts, photographs, and early navigation tools that bring its rich past to life. Visitors can explore the small house and imagine the responsibility it once carried, sensing the excitement of spotting a shipwreck and the thrill of a rescue. Guests can look out over the coast, just as past keepers did, scanning the horizon in this living piece of history. The House of Refuge stands as a vital landmark, not only to Martin County but to the surrounding region, a unique testament to its enduring importance and legacy.

When are you open?
Mon-Sat 10am-4pm; Sunday 1pm-4pm. THE MUSEUMS ARE CLOSED: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Easter, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas.
