LUMEYO
OUR EXPERIENCES
We operate a weaving business that recycles second-hand sweaters, revives the weaving heritage, and empowers women in underprivileged areas of Jordan.
We offer weaving workshops that introduce tourists to the Bedouin weaving tradition, providing an opportunity to meet local women and acquire unique, handmade, sustainable, and authentic products from Jordan.
ABOUT US
Dutch designer and social entrepreneur Sandra Jelly began working with six weaving women in Udruh in 2009. In 2014, she established a not-for-profit business that has since evolved into a social enterprise. Today, this enterprise engages around 30 women from communities in Um Seihoun, Udruh, Guewera, Shakriehe, and Aqaba.
Mission:
To contribute to the reduction of textile waste by recycling sweaters suitable for weaving, to promote conscious fashion by creating practical products, to revive cultural heritage by giving new purpose to the Bedouin handicraft tradition, and to empower local women by creating international demand that allows them to work from home while caring for their families and animals.
OUR IMPACT
Environmental Impact: We reduce textile waste by creating value from discarded materials, raising environmental awareness in the process.
Cultural Impact: By reviving Bedouin weaving heritage, we have inspired the youth to learn the craft. This initiative has resulted in weaving training being recognized as a registered vocational license by the Ministry of Labor.
Social Impact: We empower women by teaching them design and quality standards, helping them access international markets while working from home. This strengthens their socio-economic position in their communities.
