!Khwa ttu
OUR EXPERIENCES
!Khwa ttu is a San culture and education centre based on an 850 hectare conservation area, 70 kilometres north of Cape Town, South Africa. It is a thriving tourism destination, with a world class heritage centre, restaurant, beautifully designed farm cottages, to eco cabins hidden deep in the fynbos, each with a private hot tub, thrilling mountain bike trails, and a shop selling hand-crafted gifts found nowhere else. San guides lead unique tours for visitors, fulfilling !Khwa ttu’s mission to enable San to reclaim and share their heritage, in their own way.
Situated in the Cape Floral Kingdom, itself a UNESCO World Heritage site, !Khwa ttu embraces conservation and champions a range of environmental stewardship and programmes.
ABOUT US
!Khwa ttu’s vision is to be a leading and sustainable centre that celebrates San culture. Our mission is to enable the San to reclaim and share their heritage in their own way. !Khwa ttu offers immersive, place-based experiences that connect over 22,000 visitors a year with San knowledge and culture, the natural environment, and the pressing challenges of our time—from biodiversity loss to cultural erosion. Education and awareness are core to our mission, not as an add-on, but woven into every guest encounter, tour, training, and story shared.
OUR IMPACT
!Khwa ttu is a registered South African Non-Profit Company and Public Benefit Organisation, co-managed by the San and the Swiss Ubuntu Foundation. The land is protected in perpetuity. A regenerative business model channels tourism revenue into social, educational, and environmental impact. San voices guide governance at every level, supported by a Board and advisory team. The annually reviewed Direction Document helps align strategy and continuous improvement.
!Khwa ttu creates dignified livelihoods and opportunities for San communities through skills development, heritage restitution, and ethical tourism. Each year, up to 20 San youth participate in a six-month Sustainable Livelihoods Internship, while 40–50 San individuals are employed across operations. The San Heritage Centre, curated by San, preserves and shares their culture, challenging stereotypes and building pride. As a Fair Trade Tourism site, !Khwa ttu reinvests in San-led initiatives and shares its model regionally.
Located in the Cape Floristic Region, !Khwa ttu practices sustainable waste, water, and energy management, and actively restores threatened habitats through its San-led Green Team. Efforts include invasive species removal, reseeding, composting, solar energy use, and water conservation. Sustainability is embedded through staff training and guest education.
