Long Island Retreats & Larder
OUR EXPERIENCES
We provide bespoke tour options for the travel trade, which allow visitors to step off the beaten track and out onto our Hebridean crofts. Tours can be tailored from a minimum 1-hour croft experiences with our Shetland ponies, Highland cattle, Cheviot sheep, and large black pigs to multi-day island tours. We focus on creating authentic island experiences that allow visitors to leave with memories of a lifetime.
ABOUT US
Our goal is to preserve and highlight our crofting heritage and culture through authentic island experiences, showcasing our island's culture, heritage, and Gaelic language to visitors. We aim to provide an immersive island experience where visitors can fully engage with the island way of life, offering croft tours and experiences that provide insight into our unique culture, heritage, and natural environment. Additionally, we seek to educate and inspire the next generation in traditional crofting practices by collaborating with local schools to deliver crofting courses and offering work experience and apprenticeships to young people on the island. Furthermore, we aim to showcase the quality of our island produce, particularly our naturally reared beef and lamb, by offering a Field to Fork Experience that allows visitors to sample local produce while learning about its origins and importance.
OUR IMPACT
We prioritize positive impacts on both the local community and the natural environment we oversee. Our tours emphasize responsible access and respect for the fragile machair ecosystem of the Western Isles, educating visitors about its significance and the protected species it supports. Being off-grid, we're committed to reducing our carbon footprint and working towards net zero, utilizing renewable energy at Loch Skipport. We're dedicated to establishing a local supply chain for our croft produce, recognizing the island's reliance on shipped-in food. Additionally, we facilitate visits for local special needs and disability groups to interact with our animals, particularly therapeutic ponies and lambs. We also focus on youth retention, offering training and employment opportunities for school pupils and leavers to encourage them to stay on the island if they choose. Preserving traditional heritage and culture is paramount to us, and we provide training in traditional crofting skills to ensure their continuation. Our tours aim to showcase and teach Gaelic to visitors, offering insights into the islands' native language and culture.
