About
Finland, the world’s happiest country, is the perfect destination for travellers seeking authentic, meaningful experiences. With nature always close by—even in major cities—and a strong culture of sustainability, safety, and wellbeing, Finland offers something special for the mindful traveller. Famous for its saunas, Santa Claus, and green values, Finland’s four distinct regions and seasons provide endless opportunities to explore.

The Helsinki Region combines urban sophistication with coastal charm. From Nordic design and vibrant food culture to public saunas and scenic nature trails, the capital city is known as one of the world’s most liveable. Nature and city life exist side by side, offering the best of both worlds.

The Coast and Archipelago boasts the world’s largest archipelago, with over 50,000 islands scattered across the Baltic Sea. Discover lively coastal towns, secluded lighthouses, historic manors, and national parks—perfect for uncovering hidden gems and soaking in the sea air.

Lakeland, Europe’s largest lake district, is where Finns go to unwind and reconnect with nature. With thousands of pristine lakes and surrounding forests, the region offers year-round activities like cruises, fishing, paddle boarding, ice swimming, and skating. Cottages dot the lakeshores, offering the perfect way to relax the Finnish way.

Lapland, Finland’s northernmost region, is known for its Arctic wilderness, magical light phenomena like the Midnight Sun and Northern Lights, and of course, Santa Claus. It’s also home to the indigenous Sámi people, whose culture and traditions add depth to the region. Lapland offers unforgettable experiences in every season.

Whether you're after adventure, culture, or calm, Finland invites you to connect with nature, embrace slow living, and experience something truly profound.

Impact
Finland takes a holistic approach to sustainability—supporting local communities, reducing inequality, and protecting nature. Our national programme, Sustainable Travel Finland (STF), developed by Visit Finland, helps travellers and tourism professionals make more responsible choices.

The STF programme offers tools like a CO₂ calculator and performance indicators to help companies and destinations adopt sustainable practices. Those meeting the criteria receive the STF label, a trusted sign of environmental and social responsibility. By June 2025, around 500 businesses and destinations had earned the label, making it easier for travellers to support local, sustainable tourism.

Whether you’re exploring Helsinki, the Coast and Archipelago, Lakeland, or Lapland, STF-labelled experiences offer meaningful ways to connect with nature and culture—through eco-friendly places to eat, sleep, and explore.

Consistently ranked the world’s happiest country, Finland’s joy is deeply connected to its nature. Lakes, forests, and clean air support well-being and are central to our way of life. The STF programme helps preserve this through actions like wetland restoration, pollinator fields, and traditional meadow maintenance—all now part of the tourism experience.

The STF programme unites 70 regional DMOs and over 1,500 tourism companies, and Finland is committed to becoming fossil-free by 2035. We’ve also joined the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, with a national plan that includes 20 goals and 163 actions.

At Visit Finland, we believe that sustainable tourism is key to protecting our environment, strengthening communities, and ensuring long-term happiness—for visitors and locals alike.
