Peru
Pongobamba, a sacred journey into the colors of the andean world
OUR EXPERIENCES
Discover the magical Piuray Lagoon in the Vilcanota Mountain Range, just 31 kilometers from Cusco. This blue-water lagoon reflects the Andean sky and serves as a vital water source for surrounding communities. The experience includes a visit to the Pongobamba viewpoint, where you will learn about ancestral Inca techniques for agriculture and water management. Engage with local culture through a demonstration of traditional Andean weaving, guided by community artisans who preserve ancient textile knowledge. Conclude your journey by experiencing the “Andean marriage,” a sacred ritual that symbolically connects participants with nature, local deities, and the spiritual essence of the Andes.
ABOUT US
The Kusi Kausay Community Tourism Association of Pongobamba is made up of twelve families from our picturesque community. Due to our proximity to the city of Cusco, we are a must-see destination. Our daily life revolves around Mother Earth and Lake Piuray, which bear witness to the passage of time and our generations. In our community, travelers can connect deeply with the environment where we express our gratitude with Andean ceremonies and share our coexistence and productive activities. In addition, travelers can visit our main archaeological sites in Chinchero, such as the colonial temple and the site museum.
OUR IMPACT
The Kusi Kausay Association preserves Lake Piuray and communal lands through an ancestral organizational model that manages community tourism. It strengthens cultural identity by supporting Pongobamba weaving, a women-led ancestral tradition passing technique and stories across generations, safeguarding craftsmanship and living heritage for future community and cultural resilience.
