Beamish, The Living Museum of the North
OUR EXPERIENCES
Beamish is an amazing experience, bringing history to life, from the 1820s to the 1950s. Visitors to the award-winning open air museum travel back in time, being immersed in the unforgettable sights, sounds, smells and delicious tastes of the past, from visiting the Edwardian school and 1950s toy shop and cinema, and going underground in a mine, to tasting freshly-made bread and sweets, braving the 1900s dentist and getting a 1950s hairstyle. Visitors can explore homes, shops, and other buildings, discovering fascinating stories from costumed staff and volunteers.

OUR IMPACT
Beamish creates meaningful impact as a charity museum that preserves North East heritage while supporting community wellbeing. Its Sustainability Strategy advances the UN SDGs through practical actions such as installing air source heat pumps, planting trees and hedgerows, using reclaimed materials, adding EV chargers and refill stations, and opening community allotments. Beamish also supports local suppliers, encourages sustainable transport, and partners with underserved communities through discounted access, youth programming, and outreach activities.
Accessibility, inclusion, and learning remain core priorities. Beamish offers wheelchair-accessible transport, mobility aids, quiet and sensory spaces, Changing Places facilities, and dementia-friendly sessions in a dedicated 1950s cottage. The museum provides learning experiences for students of all ages, including STEM-based programs and hands-on projects. It is also broadening representation through exhibits and initiatives that highlight immigrant communities,
